The Tale of Chú Cuội
A woodsman known as Chú Cuội who lived in a small village had discovered a magic banyan tree with leaves that could heal the sick and dying. One day, Nguyet Tien, the daughter of the village's lord had fallen ill and was on her deathbed. Chú Cuội made his way to the lord's manor with a leaf from the magic tree and offered to heal her. With some skepticism, the lord allowed it and when Nguyet Tien awoke, the lord was overjoyed. He granted Chú Cuội his daughter's hand in marriage (this was the olden days) and money to build a new house with. Chú Cuội built his house next to the tree and Nguyet Tien grew a garden around it.
As she planted more and more flowers, she ran out of room in her garden so she started digging near the tree. While doing this, she accidentally disturbed the tree's roots (one version of the story has her urinate on the tree but I'm trying to keep it classy). The tree pulled itself out of the ground and said "eff this, time for me to leaf". It started to float up towards the moon as trees often do. Chú Cuội was just coming home and when he saw this, he immediately grabbed onto one of the roots of the tree as they both headed upwards. He and the tree got stuck on the moon with nothing to pass the time except his flute.
Now during every Mid-Autumn Moon Fest in Vietnam (Tết Trung Thu), the children make lanterns and light them to help Chú Cuội find his way back home.
